Miami Dolphins History

The Dolphins were founded in 1965 by attorney-politician Joe Robbie and actor Danny Thomas. The team initially was part of the American Football League starting in 1966 as an expansion team before joining the NFL in 1970 as part of the AFL-NFL merger. Since then, the Dolphins have earned the fourth-best regular season record in the NFL and are considered among the top 10 of any team in the four major professional sports in North America. The Dolphins are one of the most successful teams in NFL history and the oldest major-league sports franchise to continually operate in the state of Florida. The team has posted a minimum of 10 wins in 22 out of 52 seasons, appeared in 23 playoffs, won 13 division titles, five AFC championships, and two Super Bowls. The 1972 team continues as the only undefeated team in NFL history, having won Super Bowl VII after a 17-0 record-setting season. Don Shula, the coach of this historic team was admitted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and honored during the recent 2020 season. Stephen M. Ross, an American real estate developer and philanthropist, owns the team and serves as Chairman & Managing General Partner.
